For more than three decades, Darby Pool has been an integral part of Kansas City’s cycling scene. From his early days working at Turner Schwinn to his current role as the owner of Bikes For The Likes Of Us, Pool’s expertise in bikes and dedication to service have earned him a loyal following. However, recent changes in Olathe have led to a significant move that marks a new chapter for both Pool and his beloved business.

The Move from I-35/Santa Fe to Downtown Olathe
If you’ve driven through the I-35/Santa Fe Interchange area recently, you’ve likely noticed major redevelopment efforts. For local businesses like Bikes For The Likes Of Us, these changes have meant navigating construction, shifting traffic patterns, and increased disruption. As the city works to modernize the interchange, it became clear that the bike shop’s location in the affected area would no longer be sustainable.
For Pool, who’s always had an unwavering commitment to his customers, the relocation decision was not made lightly. “It was clear that staying in the area was no longer an option for us,” Pool said. “But I wanted to remain in Olathe because it’s home—it’s where the heart of my business has always been.”
While the decision to move presented challenges, Pool was quick to take action. He credits the city of Olathe with offering great communication and a solid relocation package, making the transition much smoother than it could have been. He took advantage of this early communication and worked with city officials to continue serving the community he’s grown so close to.
Relocating to Downtown Olathe: The New Home of Bikes For The Likes Of Us
After evaluating several locations, Pool decided to move his shop to downtown Olathe at 105 S. Kansas Avenue, a prime spot in the heart of the city. While the new location offers a fresh start, it comes with some trade-offs.
“I won’t sugarcoat it,” Pool said. “The new space is smaller and definitely more expensive than where we were. But it’s also much more visible and part of an exciting downtown atmosphere that’s been growing. Hopefully when it warms up this location will bring in more foot traffic, which is important for a shop like ours.”
While the new location is smaller, Pool is making it work. Space constraints mean less room for product displays and bike storage, particularly for the bikes in for service. But, as anyone who’s ever had a conversation with Darby knows, he’s not one to shy away from a challenge. He’s already adapted the layout to maximize the available space and ensure that customers have a smooth and enjoyable experience when they visit.
Why Olathe?
Remaining in Olathe was never in question for Pool, and for good reason. His shop is the only dedicated bike shop in the area, which makes it a key resource for the local cycling community. From BMX bikes to mountain bikes, road bikes, and even electric-powered options, Bikes For The Likes Of Us offers a wide selection of bicycles for all types of riders.
Additionally, the shop is a major hub for bike repair and maintenance. With certified mechanics on hand, Pool’s shop is a trusted destination for riders who need expert service, regardless of what brand or model they ride. Relocating to downtown Olathe brings the shop closer to the town square and the downtown bike lane—perfect for test rides and giving the community easier access to local outdoor spaces. Ironically, just as we were discussing the perks of the bike lane, a motorist decided to take an unauthorized tour of it by driving a few blocks in it.
“There’s something special about being in the heart of downtown,” Pool reflects. “I’ve always loved Olathe and its growing bike culture. Moving here allows me to stay connected with the community I’ve been a part of for so long.”
A Legacy Built on Service
One of the cornerstones of Bikes For The Likes Of Us is its unwavering commitment to great service and open communication. Pool has built a reputation for his thorough, knowledgeable approach to bike sales and repairs, something he learned during his time working at Turner Schwinn and, later, through running his own shop.
“The goal has always been to be the best resource for bikers in the area,” Pool says. “Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced rider, we want to make sure you have everything you need to enjoy your ride—and we’re here to help you maintain it, too.”
Pool’s extensive experience and dedication to his craft have helped him become a trusted name, not only in Olathe but also throughout the Kansas City area. His shop has earned the title of Kansas City’s largest BMX retailer, and he continues to serve riders of all types, from those hitting dirt trails to those enjoying the smoothest of road rides.
What’s Next for Bikes For The Likes of Us?
Though the new location has presented its challenges, Pool is optimistic about the future. As Olathe’s downtown area continues to develop, he believes his business is well-positioned to grow alongside the community. With bike culture becoming more ingrained in Olathe’s fabric, there’s no telling how far Bikes For The Likes Of Us can go.
“We’re always adapting, always moving forward,” Pool says. “Bikes are a passion for me. This isn’t just a business—it’s a part of who I am. I’m excited for what’s to come in this next chapter.”
So, whether you’re looking for a new ride, need to get your bike tuned up, or just want to chat about cycling, Darby Pool and Bikes For The Likes Of Us are ready to welcome you to their new downtown location. With decades of experience and a commitment to the Olathe community, the future looks bright for this hometown bike shop.
